What is Golden Milk?
Golden Milk is a beverage that has been used in traditional Chinese medicine for centuries and is known for it’s natural anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties. The health benefits are linked to its main ingredient turmeric which is made up of curcumin. Turmeric is only comprised of 3% curcumin by weight but when paired with black pepper it can boost the benefits. “Black pepper contains a compound called piperine, which prevents the liver from metabolizing the curcumin before it can be absorbed into the blood stream. As little as a pinch of black pepper in combination with turmeric can increase the bioavailability by as much as 2,000%.”
Ingredients:
2 cups almond milk, or other non-dairy milk
1 tablespoon ground turmeric
¼ teaspoon ground ginger
4 black peppercorns or a pinch of black pepper
1 stick cinnamon
1 star anise
1 pinch whole clove
honey, or sweetener of your choice, optional
Preparation:
Add the almond milk to a small pot over medium heat.
Add the turmeric, ginger, peppercorns, cinnamon stick, star anise, and cloves. Whisk to combine.
Heat the milk for 4-5 minutes, until steaming, but do not let it come to a boil.
Serve warm or over ice and sweeten to taste.
Enjoy!
